Assistive Technology

According to Cook and Hussey (2000), assistive technology refes to a broad range of devices, services, strategies and practices that are formed and applied to improve the problems face by individuals who have a disability.

One piece of assistive technology that was introduced in the assistive technology tutorial was a switch. Switches range in a variety of sizes, shapes, colours and cost. The function of a switch is to enable somebody who lacks fine motor skills to make choices and operate something.

A switch increases functional capacity for the user as it allows them to participate. For example, a child in a classroom who is unable to use a computer mouse to do a lack of fine motor skills, may use a large switch in order to operate the programme they are trying to use.

Another piece of Assisstive Technology that I came across on my placement was Clicker 5. Clicker 5 is a piece of software that is used in schools to allow students to read and write. Students can participate in class activities with Clicker 5 and present their writing to the rest of the class.

The Internet and Online Communities!

This week we were required to investigate an online community.
The community I have chosen to investigate is Window Live Messenger
http://windowslive.com/desktop/messenger

This community allows people to chat online and send instant messages to their favourite people or groups. It is a communication tool. Messenger makes it easy to stay in touch!

You can chat online with a variety of people, friends or strangers! You can personalize your screen, add photos, choose fonts and backgrounds! You can play games while you're chatting, you can find our "What's New?" and share photos!

People choose to contribute to this community as it allows them somebody to talk to. you don't need to see their face, you don't need to know who they are1 Or it may be a friend who is living on the other side of the world that you choose to talk to! It offers people an opportunity to find out about somebody else, meet new people, catch up with old friends, share photos of what they have been up to.
People may contribute to this community in the hopes of finding a companion!

The topics that are discussed in this community depend on the people having the conversation! You can talk about anything you want!

Ethical issues that may arise from this community include ethical issues such as lack of identity - you can not be 100% sure who you are talking to! Somebody may put photos up that include you, which you do not want strangers to see! It is important to remember about ethics in any online community you participate in!

One of the advantages with this online community is that it not reliant on geographic proximity! You can talk to anyone, wherever they are! You can talk instantly, and not have to wait for your letter to arrive in the post! You can say what you want, and the person you are talking to will receive it immediately!

In comparison to traditional communities, this online community lacks face to face contact. You do not get the person to person contact that you can get by meeting your friend for coffee! It is less personal and can lead to some people spending a lot of time sitting at the computer talking to others, instead of going out into the community! It is neglecting one community, for another!

This is the movie we made for Tutorial 5! Parking issues in Dunedin!!!
We used the storyboard and scripting techniques as mentioned below!

Video Production Sessions

YouTube provides a forum that allows people to connect, inform and inspire others across the globe (YouTube.com). YouTube is the world's most popular online video community. For more information go to www.YouTube.com

When making a video, it is beneficial to begin my creating a storyboard. A storyboard is a series of drawings of the propsed film, as it will appear on the screen. It is a plan of the end product and is often referred to during production.

Scripting
is also a technique used when creating a video. Scripting is the vehicle by which the thoughts and ideas are transmitted to the audience (Sunderland, 2010). A good script should include modds and expressions, facial expressions, vocal experssions, movement, interaction with other characters, sound track instructions, lighting etc. The more detail the author includes, the closer the end product will be to their intentions. The script should include enough technical information to enable the director to create the visual and audio picture that the author wants.

Blog Creation Tasks

Blog (web log) is a type of website that is maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentaries, description of events, videos/photos (Wikipedia).
Blogger is a free publishing tool from Google that allows one to easily share their thoughts with the world. Blogger makes it simple to post text, photos and videos! There are many websites that allow for blogging, as well as Blogger, another popular blogging website is www.weebly.com.

Digital Camera use & applications

"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature."
Digital cameras have advanced, and are advancing every day! There are many advantages and disadvantages with digital cameras, which are completely dependent on the individual! Modern digital camers are quite technological. You can view the picture you have taken, as soon as you have taken it! You can edit it, view it, save it, print it, all straight from your camera! Traditional cameras do not have these functions - you just take the photo, and then get it processed, then you can view it.
Digital Images can be stored, transferred and manipulated using the internet, email, photoshop and more!
Ethical issues that may arise with using digital cameras include informed consent, the responsibility of looking after images with other people etc in them. It is important that ethical issues are accounted for when using digital camers.
In Occupational Therapy, digital images are being used for many reasons. They are used to take photos of house modifications, to take photos to use for instructions. They are being used increasingly more as the functions they have are incredibly useful for an OT.

Flickr.com is a website that allows you to upload the photos you have taken and display them. www.flickr.com allows you to manage and share your photos. There are other sites like Flickr,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_photo_sharing_websites has a list of websites and what they do.

Digital and Optical zoom are two different terms used in technology. Optical zoom means that
the lens changes focal length and magnification as it is zoomed, retaining the image quality.
Digital zoom causes a loss in quality. It crops the image to a smaller size.

A megapixel (Pixel = PICture Element) is one million pixels. A pixel is a small square that makes up a picture!
